Valerie McLaughlin
Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)
My path to psychotherapy began long before graduate school. For over 11 years, I have worked as a Registered Nurse in mental health, supporting individuals through some of life’s most difficult moments. These experiences taught me that healing begins with feeling heard, understood, and accepted, values that continue to guide my work.
I hold a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology and take a person-centred, trauma-informed approach. I integrate evidence-based modalities, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). My work is grounded in strength- and values-based principles, and I believe therapy should be collaborative, compassionate, and tailored to each person’s unique needs and goals.
I primarily work with adults (18+) and have a particular interest in supporting first responders, veterans, healthcare professionals, and those in high-stress roles. I also work with clients experiencing trauma, operational stress injuries, anxiety, depression, substance use concerns, grief, burnout, and major life transitions. With experience in forensic and mental health settings, I understand how chronic stress and trauma impact emotional wellbeing, relationships, and overall quality of life.
Given my background in mental health nursing, I am also open to working with older adolescents on a case-by-case basis, particularly those experiencing anxiety, mood concerns, or stress-related challenges.
My goal is to create a safe, supportive space where you can explore your experiences without judgment. Together, we will build on your strengths, develop practical coping strategies, and help you reconnect with what matters most.
Outside of the therapy room, I enjoy hiking, running, spending time with my family and animals, and continuing my professional growth. I believe growth is lifelong, and I feel privileged to support clients as they move toward healing, resilience, and meaningful change.
